Patricia A. Maulden is Professor of Conflict Resolution and Director of the Dialogue and Difference Project with the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Currently, she is investigating the dynamics of NGOs as private peace-building contractors and their roles in the post-conflict peace economy. She explores the post-conflict paradox and looks into peace-building over time, more specifically the trajectories of post-conflict knowledge.
This Module examines conflict dynamics, resolution approaches as well as considerations and constraints to these factors. You will deal with broad theoretical concepts of conflict management and reconciliation, different types of conflicts and combatants as well as with the development of private security organizations and new strategies of peacemaking. Case studies will illustrate for you various phenomena, options for actions, and consequences.
- You will be familiarized with different security mechanisms, peacemaking strategies and examples of their success or failure in different conflicts worldwide.
- You will have the opportunity to learn useful tactics and strategies to enhance planning and policy-making in conflict and post-conflict management.
- You will be provided with practical skills concerning active participating in controversial discussions, presenting and supporting your own arguments and negotiation between conflict parties.
- Submitting a short essay which reflects your analysis of the theoretical framework covered in the units.
- Writing blog posts based on videos oriented at applying conflict management theory in different empirical cases.
- Submitting a final research paper.
