Postgraduate Certificate Options:

1. The Puzzles of Eastern Europe

To many observers, the fall of communism in 1989 marked the beginning of a long but steady re-integration of the former Soviet and socialist states into the “Western” order of international politics. Even though this tendency can be detected in many of the countries evolving to functioning democracies, market economies and members of the European Union, the developments concerning both internal and foreign affairs are anything but uniform. The current war in Ukraine and the tensions between Russia and some of its neighbors show that the region is far from stable. Eastern Europe is still in flux and experts on the region are desperately needed. In order to tackle these challenges, the Center for Global Politics offers the new postgraduate certificate on Eastern Europe. This postgraduate certificate is designed for those who are engaged in or plan to embark upon a career with a focus on Eastern Europe, be it in the government, corporate, academic or not-for-profit sector. Module Options: 3 out of 4

2. From International Relations to Global Politics

With the rise of globalization, a plethora of new actors entered the sphere of international politics. It is no longer mainly nation-states that shape global affairs. They increasingly have to compete or cooperate with multinational corporations, the media, financial institutions, social movements and NGOs, or within the framework of international organizations such as the EU and the UN in order to exert their influence. This certificate for professionals offers an overview of how global politics works today. It allows for further training in a series of related courses for those bend on specializing. It also offers general training for those wishing to achieve a wider understanding of international politics’ actors, structures and processes. The certificate is designed for professionals who are engaged in, or plan to embark upon, a career that requires an expertise in international relations and global affairs, be it in the government, corporate, academic or not-for-profit sector.

3. The Emergence of Global Flows

Global flows of capital, trades and services, information and people are dramatically altering the nature of politics and the opportunities for nation-states to control or influence events. Traditional schools of thought trying to explain international relations mainly through the lens of nation-states need to be supplemented with innovative approaches emphasizing the importance of the current dynamic developments. This certificate for professionals introduces and explains the concept of global flows and global governance. Completing these three modules results in a good preparation to deal with the challenges set by contemporary politics and economics on a global scale. The certificate is designed for those who are engaged in or plan to embark upon a career with a focus on Global Politics, be it in the government, corporate, academic or not-for-profit sector. Module Options: 3 out of 4
