Module: Changing Global Landscapes: Globalization Challenges

Tommaso Durante is Lecturer in Global Studies at the School of Global, Urban and Social Studies of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), Australia where he has taught courses on Critical Ideas in Contemporary Social and Political Theory, on Religion, Conflict and Globalisation and on Culture and Business Practice in Asia. He also taught Methods for the Study of Globalization at the Global and European Studies Institute (GESI) of Leipzig University in Germany, where he was awarded the 2017 Erasmus Mundus - Global Studies scholarship. He received his PhD from RMIT University in 2013 and is the author of The Visual Research Project of the Global Imaginary (2007-ongoing), an online visual archive that collects still images to investigate how symbols found in the urban spaces of global and fast globalizing cities across the planet construct a new social imaginary that is simultaneously local, national and global. The outcomes of the project contribute to better understand the phenomenon of globalization and how the global imaginary is symbolically and socially produced.

Drawing on a background in art history and theory, extended to global cultural studies, Tommaso's research is situated at the crossroad of global, urban and media studies and looks at the conceptual links between social imaginary, aesthetics and ideology. He considers himself a visual activist and addresses the production of global visual imagery as a political theory.

His current research interests are focused on aesthetics and ideologies of globalization as well as on global urban iconology, visual rhetoric, history in the making, social critical theory and methods. He is also an international award-winning visual artist. As an artist, he works with a wide range of media, producing sculpture-installations, paintings and artist books. Tommaso is Honorary Urban Scholar at the UN Global Compact Cities Programme (UNGCCP).
