After a short introductory speech of the head of the department, M. A. Chigasheva, our guest introduced himself and his activities as a journalist. Mr. Schmidt has been working for the last 10 years in the popular German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and for the past four years he has been living and working in Moscow. During this time, he had the opportunity to visit various regions of the country, and to meet with well-known politicians, statesmen, and leaders of the opposition movements.
Students who attended the event had also the opportunity to pose their questions to Mr. Schmidt, many of which touched various spheres of the political and social live in Germany and in Russia.
Towards the end, Mr. Schmidt was asked by one of the students an intriguing question, namely to characterize Russia in three words. He described the country as groß, vielschichtig, überraschend (large, multifaceted, and striking).
