Global Matters: How can an ever more unreliable Russia be contained?
CGP experts discuss the consequences of the downing of flight MH 17 over Ukraine
News from Jul 21, 2014
This week on Global Matters: The situation in and around Eastern Ukraine reached a climax last week, when the Malaysian Boeing 777, flight MH 17, was downed en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in Easter Ukraine. There is hardly a reasonable doubt that the plane was shot down by pro Russian separatists fighting for an independent Donbas.
Whereas CGP-expert Alexei Voskressenski calls for an international commission to investigate the tragedy, Andrey Makarychev argues that Russia can be contained by gradually losing its resources of international support. "Three of them are crucial", Makarychev says: The EU´s Association Agreements with Ukraine, Georgie and Moldovia; Russia´s relations with the BRICS countries; and Russian sympathizers among the far left and far right in Europe.
