News from May 16, 2016
The experts, Prof. Segbers from Free University of Berlin, Robert Brinkley, the former British ambassador in Kiev and current member of the board of Ukranian Catholic University and Taras Yatsenko, a media entrepreneur from Lviv, gave an outline of the most important issues in Ukraine and the European Union. Prof. Segbers started by carving out and explaining the six most pressing issues in the EU: The Euro crisis, terrorism, (im)migration, a possible Brexit, Russia, and the rising populism in the EU and on a global scale. Each topic was explained briefly, thereby setting a framework to discuss the relationship between the EU and Ukraine afterwards. He was followed by Robert Brinkley, who focused his input on the Brexit and ongoing reforms and political developments in Ukraine. The last expert providing an input was Taras Yatsenko, who talked about the most pressing issues in Ukraine, especially the role of the media and economic developments. After the experts's inputs, participants had the chance to ask questions. In the remaining time, participants and experts alike discussed controversial points together. The discussion touched upon various fields, e.g. the rule of law and current changes in this regard in Ukraine, migration and the dealing with internally displaced persons, and informal patron networks in Ukraine.
