During a Political Breakfast Discussion at the Academy of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Berlin, Prof. Klaus Segbers gave a speech titled “US-President Donald Trump: Impacts and Consequences on Global Politics”.

News from Dec 05, 2016

With the reality of Donald Trump being the President-elect of the United States of America, the world is at a turning point of the Western Script. Apart from a severance test for the USA and the European Union, governments in general are no longer in the position to efficiently tackle Globalization issues themselves – flows of people, ideas and commerce are dissolving national borders.

Amongst a selected audience of multipliers from Berlin, Professor Segbers adressed the following topics in a 7 Step Diagnosis for a thorough understanding of causalities:

  1. The unresolved Euro-Crisis
  2. Modern Terrorism
  3. Global Migration Flows
  4. Referenda on Complex Political Problems
  5. Russia’s Role in Global Politics
  6. International Trade Agreements like TTIP, CETA, TPP
  7. Security Policy at NATO

As a whole, these issues cause incertainty and overstrain – rational arguments no longer persuade when problems are of an emotional nature. Consequently, Populists’ simple solutions to complex problems seem very appealing. It is therefore up to Politics to communicate a compelling narrative and to try to create a positive climate for discussion.
