With the rise of populism all across the globe, we decided to carry out this year’s fall school in Vietnam under the guiding theme “Global Populism: Is it Unstoppable? – Experiences from Asia and Europe”. The topic attracted 21 students from Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, the U.S.A., Italy and the Netherlands. With the help of Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation Vietnam Office and our longstanding partner USSH/ VNU-Hanoi, we put together a thrilling program that included various modules on global populism, the current state of play of the EU and ASEAN as well as the role of media in (populist) societies. The academic program also included a panel discussion on global populism. Experts from Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and Germany presented the political situation in their countries and analyzed in how far populism is currently rising in the respective regions. Another program’s highlight was an overnight trip to Halong Bay. The program concluded with a module on CSR as well as a simulation game on the topic of “Populists in Power”.
