One of the highlights of this in-house classes week was the excursion to the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) on February 28.

SWP is not affiliated with any party or interest group, but works mainly for the German government and the Bundestag, as well as for relevant international organization such as the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations. The guiding theme of yesterday´s visit to the Stiftung was “German Security Policy”, during which students from both online master programs had the opportunity to attend the expert talk of Oberst a.D. Wolfgang Richter.
Mr. Richter´s areas of expertise include problems of pan-European security cooperation, the relation between NATO and Russia, unresolved territorial conflicts in Europe, as well as implications of new military technologies for strategies, international humanitarian law and humanitarian arms control.
Some of the main points that were made during his talk were in regard to the foundation and current crisis of the European Security Order, the role of the OSCE and arms control for stability and crisis management; as well as the NATO-Russia relations. Furthermore, Mr. Richter addressed the global implications of renewed geopolitical competition between the great powers.
A lively discussion ensued. Mr. Richter proved knowledgable around the world.
